Waste sorting/recycling

Get sorting right! HSY pilot launches in ten of our buildings

HSY’s new trial aims to make waste sorting more efficient. The objective is to reduce the volume of mixed waste, as this is the most expensive waste stream to recycle.

Why is it worth sorting waste?

According to research by HSY, the majority of mixed waste – around 70 per cent – could be recycled. Improving waste sorting can help to keep waste management costs down and reduce the environmental impact. Waste charges also have an impact on the cost of housing.

At present, the majority of waste collected from VAV’s properties is also mixed waste, which is the most expensive type of waste.

Significantly more of the other recyclable waste streams could be sorted. Other recyclable waste streams (biowaste, plastic, metal, glass, cardboard and paper) are less costly to manage. Natural resources would also be conserved if recyclable waste were channelled into reuse.

What is the HSY trial involving?

The pilot is examining opportunities for developing waste management in VAV’s housing estates.

Activities included in the pilot:

  • Inspections of waste collection areas and bins
  • Signs and reminders to be placed in the waste storage area
  • Guidance and information for residents
  • Recommendations tailored to the property to improve waste sorting
  • A biowaste bag holder and biowaste bags to be placed in the waste storage area for the duration of the pilot
  • Resident surveys and recommendations for the future

Ten VAV buildings taking part

The pilot will be carried out in ten VAV properties, which were selected on the basis of their location. Participating VAV properties:

  • Apajakuja 7
  • Helmikuja 1
  • Huddingenpolku 2
  • Kukinkuja 8
  • Sahatie 2
  • Ojahaantie 1
  • Ruukkukuja 1
  • Ruukuntekijäntie 10
  • Ruukuntekijäntie 12
  • Vaskikuja 2

Residents of the participating properties will receive further information on this matter on a targeted basis during the summer season. The pilot will begin at the end of May/beginning of June with a mixed waste survey. The results of the trial will be published on VAV’s website in early 2027.
