Heading off on holiday? Check these things before you go
A summer holiday or any other extended absence is a lovely time to relax, but it’s worth carrying out a few important checks before you leave. With a little preparation, you can prevent damage, improve the security of your home and set off on holiday with peace of mind.
1. Lock your doors and windows carefully
- Check that all windows are closed, including ventilation windows.
- Lock the balcony door and balcony glazing.
- Make sure the front door locks properly.
2. Turn off the taps and check your household appliances
- Turn off the water taps for the dishwasher and washing machine.
- Check that there are no water leaks from the taps or pipe connections.
3. Switch off unnecessary electrical appliances and test your smoke alarm
- Switch off any unnecessary electrical appliances and unplug small appliances such as coffee machines, kettles and televisions.
- Test that your smoke alarm is working before you leave.
4. Make sure your plants are watered
- Place water-filled balls under your plants, for example, whilst you’re away.
- You can also ask a neighbour or friend to help water your plants whilst you’re away.
5. If your home has a burglar alarm, remember to switch it on
- Please do not hide your keys near your home or storage areas. Instead, give a spare key to someone you trust.
6. Make your home look lived-in
- Don’t close all the curtains.
- If your home’s lights have a timer function, set them to come on for a few hours as dusk falls.
- If necessary, ask a neighbour or friend to empty your letterbox and check that everything is in order whilst you are away.
- If your front door has a letter slot, leave the inner door ajar. This will allow the post to fall inside.
7. Take out the rubbish and clear perishable food from the fridge
- Take organic waste and other rubbish to the recycling point.
- Empty the fridge of any perishable items or freeze them whilst you are away.
- Check that there are no open food items left in the kitchen to attract pests.
