Live safely: check your smoke alarms regularly
Today, 11 February, is 112 Day – Emergency Number Day – so now is a good time to check that the smoke alarms in your home are working.
Here’s how to test your smoke alarms:
- Press the button on the smoke alarm for a couple of seconds.
- When the alarm beeps, you can release the button.
- The device is working correctly if you hear a beeping sound.
Since the start of the year, the landlord has been responsible for maintaining the smoke alarms in all VAV Group properties. If you notice a fault with your smoke alarm, please report it to customer services.
When should you call the emergency number?
Please remember that the emergency number is not intended for non-urgent incidents. Call the emergency number 112 when you need the authorities to attend your building or home urgently. An emergency is a situation in which life, health, property or the environment is under threat or at risk.
Look after your smoke alarm
- Test your smoke alarm regularly, at least once a month. This ensures that the device will work correctly in an emergency.
- Fire alarms must be kept clean. Vacuum the alarm regularly and follow the maintenance and cleaning instructions supplied with the fire alarm.
- Please contact VAV’s customer service immediately if a fire alarm installed by VAV is faulty.
- Installed fire alarms must not be moved or removed.
