Summer flowers bring joy to residents and bees

Planting summer flowers in the courtyards of block-of-flats offers many benefits for both residents and the environment.

A flower-filled courtyard can promote social interaction amongst residents. In many blocks, residents have set up gardening groups or resident representatives have taken responsibility for planting flowers, which fosters a sense of community and strengthens neighbourly relations.

Furthermore, planting and tending to summer flowers can provide significant mental wellbeing. Gardening is known to be relaxing and calming, and it can offer residents a pleasant way to spend time outdoors and improve the atmosphere of the residential environment.

Flowering plantings not only beautify the environment but also provide vital habitats for pollinators, such as butterflies and bees, which play a key role in maintaining biodiversity. Many pollinator species are endangered, and planting pollinator-friendly plants such as carnations, pansies, marigolds, yarrow and sunflowers can help to preserve the populations of these important insects.

All in all, planting summer flowers in the courtyards of block-of-flats is beneficial in many ways, promoting both ecological diversity and the well-being and sense of community among residents.

Are you planning to plant summer flowers in your courtyard too? Here are the instructions for VAV residents:

  • Summer flowers are a joy in VAV residents’ gardens and form part of residents’ activities. VAV provides funding for the purchase of flowers.
  • The funding for the flowers does not reduce the annual budget for residents’ activities.
  • Residents’ committees manage the summer flowers together with the residents.
  • The chairperson or elected representative of the residents’ committee has access to an S Group business card. This can be used to collect summer flowers and planting supplies  from S Group shops.
  • If necessary, VAV can also issue a separate purchase authorisation for summer flowers to the chairperson of the residents’ committee or the elected representative.
  • Please ensure that flowers are planted only in communal garden areas. It is advisable to use pots.
