Terminating a tenancy agreement
If you are moving house, give notice of termination of your tenancy agreement in writing in good time.
Terminate your tenancy agreement in good time
Are you moving to another house? If so, remember to give notice on your tenancy agreement.
A tenancy agreement must be terminated in writing. The notice period is one calendar month. This means that the tenancy agreement ends on the last day of the following month.
How do you give notice to terminate a tenancy agreement?
- Terminate your tenancy agreement online by logging in with your online banking credentials.
- If the tenancy agreement is in the names of two people, both must terminate the agreement using their own online banking credentials.
- If only one person terminates the agreement, it will continue in the name of the person who did not give notice. Please contact customer services.
If you are unable to use the online cancellation service
- Print and complete the paper cancellation form.
- Post the signed form to VAV. You will find the address at the bottom of the form.
- If the tenancy agreement is in the names of two people, you can give notice either using the same form or each using your own.
- If you are using the paper form, please post it in good time. The form must be received by the VAV office no later than the notice deadline.
Alternative to giving notice: sublet your apartment temporarily to someone else
If, for example, you have to move temporarily to another town due to work, study or illness, you can temporarily let another person use your VAV apartment.
A temporary transfer is possible for a maximum of two years. You must notify VAV of this in writing in advance. You must attach proof of the reason why you are having to move out to your notification.
- Please note that, as the original tenant, you remain responsible for the obligations under the tenancy agreement – that is, the rent, other charges and the condition of the flat – even if another person is living in your flat on a temporary basis.
- VAV flats must not be used for commercial accommodation purposes, such as letting them out via Airbnb.
